Biju Patnaik International Airport (IATA: BBI, ICAO: VEBS), also known as Bhubaneswar Airport, is situated in the city of Bhubaneswar, Odisha, India It is currently the only major airport in Odisha. It is named after the former Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik, who was also a famed aviator and freedom fighter. The Biju Patnaik Airport is developed and maintained by Lanco Infratech (Octamec) and Monnet Group.
As of 2012, Bhubaneswar was ranked 19th busiest airport in India by the Airports Authority of India registering a 19.9% traffic growth over the previous year. On 5 March 2013, the new state-of-art domestic terminal (T1) was inaugurated by Minister of Civil Aviation, Ajit Singh. The new terminal (T1) handles all domestic carriers while the international terminal (T2) is rumored to start international operations by the last week of November.

In March 2013, a new state-of art domestic terminal (T1) with a capacity of handling 4 million passengers per year was inaugurated and started operations to handle increasing air traffic. The new terminal has been developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), and has been designed to handle future traffic, consisting of trusses making arches over the main lounge.
The new terminal built at a cost of Rs. 145 crore, consists of 2 aerobridges, 4 elevators, several escalators, 16 check-in counters, 3 arrival luggage conveyors, spa, and seating areas. The new terminal contains many lounges i.e. Pal Heights Spa Lounge, Mayfair Lounge, VIP Lounges, and Departure and Arrival Lounges. The new terminal is a two-storied building with a total area of 18,240 square metres (196,300 sq ft).
The new terminal has been made environment friendly, according to green building standards, with provision for rain water harvesting, sewage treatment plants, etc. The internal walls of the terminal are decorated with tribal motifs, designs, masks, and sculptures, giving travellers a glimpse of Odisha's rich culture.The new terminal also has food kiosks, gift shops, book shops, handloom, art galleries and handicraft kiosks.
As of 2013, the international terminal (T2) is upgraded and starting international operations in two weeks, connecting the city to South-East Asia and the Middle East.[8][9] The new terminal (T1) will be used for domestic flights, while the international terminal (T2) is renovated to handle international operations.Currently four international carriers have shown interest to start operations to Bangkok, Dubai, Qatar and Singapore once the airport is ready to start international operations.
